Sewing A Jacket With A Draped Lapel

The Jacket we will be sewing today has a draped lapel that reminds one of a scarf. What makes it completely different from other jackets, is that it has no facings. That means that we have to finish the edges very neatly. It also makes it ideal for use with fabric choices that have two distinct sides. I walk you through the steps for making this jacket in today's blog.

The fabric I used for this pattern had been long forgotten and only recently rediscovered in my mom's stash.

It was rather tricky to lay the pattern out on the fabric and I had to lay the three pattern pieces out separately. This is the front panel of the jacket.

The back is cut out on the fold.

I did not have enough fabric for a long sleeve, but as the fabric was lightweight, I was happy to turn this into a short-sleeved jacket.

Start by reinforcing the collar with a staystitch.

This is what it looks like after reinforcement.

Sew the collars together at center back.

Iron the seam open.

We now need to tidy up those edges. Fold the edges in and pin in place. Note that I have swapped my pins out for full metal pins as I will be ironing over the pins.

Iron the folded edges flat.

Top stitch both sides of the seam to secure the folded edges in place.

Now staystich the back neck.

Pin the collar to the neck. Pin the shoulders together as well. Sew the pinned seams.

Pin and sew the side seams of the jacket.

Pin and sew the underarm seams on the sleeves.

Pin the sleeves to the armholes.

Sew the sleeves onto the jacket.

Pin a rolled hem for the sleeves.

Hem the sleeves.

Pin a rolled hem all around the bottom, the front, the neck and the collar of the jacket.

Sew the wrap-around rolled hem with a neat top stitch.

The finished jacket.
