Sewing A Flower Bag: The Flowers (Part 2 of 3)

I am celebrating the opportunity to sew a bag with someone who shares my passion for doing so with me. I decided to draw up a brand new pattern to do so and showed you how to copy the pattern for yourself in the previous blog. In this blog I show you how to make the flowers. In the next blog, which is the last of this series, I will show you how to construct the bag.
You can read Part One and Part Three here.

Cut six centers for the flowers from fabric of your choice.

If you have a good pair of scissors, you can cut all six layers at once, saving you a lot of time.

Cut six centers from applique vilene as well.

Keep the paper backings on until you are ready to use it.

Fold your fabric so that you have 8-16 layers, depending on your scissors. Cut as many petals as possible in one cutting. This will save you a lot of time.

I opted to make three differently coloured flowers.

I cut 32 petals from each colour; green, red and purple.

I now have enough petals and centers to make 6 flowers.

I tested the size of the flowers roughly against my bag to make sure they would fit.

Sew two petals together at the sides, leaving the base open.

What you are aiming for.

Cut the point away.

Turn the petal right side out.

Iron the petals flat.

Fold the petals in at the center and iron the fold flat.

Pin the petals in place on the bag.

Position the center in place on top of the applique vilene. Iron the center down.

Put the second flower in place.

Put the last flower in place. Do the same thing on the other panel of the bag.

Set your machine to applique.

Applique the centers of the flowers.

The finished product.

In the next blog I will show you how to sew the bag.
